A herd of wild sheep graze in the lava fields just off Saddle Road between the volcanoes, Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, on the Big Island of Hawaii.
These sheep are unique descendants of livestock deposited by Captain George Vancouver in 1791. King Kamehameha sanctioned their import as a long-term resource to feed hungry Hawaiians.
Then in the early 1950’s, Mouflon Sheep were introduced and crossbred with the feral sheep and released back onto the slopes around Mauna Kea. Today a large population of these hybrids still exists on the northern part of Mauna Loa, as well as on the lands surrounding Mauna Kea. They are not commonly seen unless you are above 5000 feet.
