It is just after sunrise and the Sandhill Cranes are leaving their roost on the Platte River and heading for the cornfields where they will spend their day.
The early spring gathering of the Sandhill Cranes on the Platte River is one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on the continent, with over a quarter of a million birds present at any one time. The day this image was captured from the VIP Blind at the Crane Trust, the week’s official count of Sandhill Cranes was 404,000. Crane Trust in located Wood River, Nebraska.
