Description
The Independence Hall Pennsylvania Supreme Court chamber can be seen through the elaborate three-arched doorways from the Central Hall.
Central Hall is one of Independence Hall’s most ornamental spaces. This area has preserved its authentic eighteenth-century characteristics, most likely because its intended purposes remained unchanged throughout history. The interior's Georgian architecture emphasized the importance of proportion and symmetry.
The Pennsylvania Supreme Court chamber was the meeting place for the colony and, later, the state's highest court. Throughout colonial times, this chamber was a central location where the colonial government would convene to discuss and decide on legal matters. Even after Pennsylvania gained statehood in 1787, the chamber continued to be utilized for these purposes.
