Description
The statue of Commodore John Barry is situated at the heart of Independence Square in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with Independence Hall visible in the background.
Born in Ireland, Commodore John Barry was a naval officer who served in both the Continental Navy and the United States Navy. He played a significant role during the American Revolutionary War and the Quasi-War. Along with John Paul Jones and John Adams, he is often referred to as "The Father of the American Navy". On December 7, 1775, he was appointed as a captain in the Continental Navy and became the first captain to command an American warship under the Continental flag. In 1797, President George Washington commissioned him as a commodore, making him the first commissioned American naval officer at that rank after the Revolutionary War.
