Artist's Description

The Mellon Institute building in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is part of Carnegie Mellon University.

The Mellon Institute, founded in 1913 by brothers Andrew and Richard Mellon, was originally part of the University of Pittsburgh. After becoming an independent research center, it moved to this new building on Fifth Avenue. The Mellon Institute eventually merged with the Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1967 to become Carnegie Mellon University.

This neo-classical building, designed by architect Benno Janssen has the largest monolithic columns in the world. Andrew Mellon, who had served as the US Secretary of the Treasury, wanted the building to have a monumental ionic colonnade similar to the Treasury building in Washington, DC.

The building was completed in 1937 and dedicated posthumously to the Mellon brothers.

I'm a travel photographer that enjoys photographing United States architecture, nature, and transportation. As the 8th photographer in 4 generations of my family, I don't remember a time when photography was not part of my life. By the time I was five years old, I was standing on a stool in the darkroom, helping my dad develop pictures. It was my job to transfer the photos from the hypo to the water bath. I went to college for interior design. After I graduated, I had a long successful career as an art buyer and designer for a large home furnishings company. In 2006, I had a significant life change.
