Description
This monument was erected by the State of Tennessee in 1848 to memorialize the location of Meriwether Lewis’s death and burial.
While traveling the Natchez Trace on his way to Washington DC, Meriwether Lewis died at the Grinder House on the night of October 11, 1809, he was only 35. There is much speculation about whether he was murdered or committed suicide. Most historians believe he committed suicide.
The broken column symbolizes a life cut short.
