Artist's Description

Located in the historic downtown of Pella, Iowa, the Pella Opera House was constructed in 1900, replacing an opera house that was destroyed by a fire in a different location. It only served as an opera house for a few years and then held live performances sporadically until 1918.

Pella architect Henry DeGooyer designed this Victorian Romanesque Revival four-story structure using the opera house in Sioux City as his guide. The orange bricks are locally produced and distinctive to Pella. The main backer for the building, Herman Rietveld, also managed Pella Drain and Tile Company who manufactured brick.

The building, renovated in 1990, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.

My husband became a medical traveler, and I decided to put my career on hold to tag along. In the process, I found my roots again. What...
