Artist's Description

Child-sized Raggedy Ann & Andy dolls sit on a park bench in Arcola, Illinois, in tribute to Johnny Gruelle.

Arcola is the birthplace of John Barton Gruelle, the creator of the Raggedy Ann & Andy dolls and the author and illustrator of the Raggedy Ann & Andy books.

While I have read several variations of the story of how Raggedy Ann & Andy were created; here is Arcola’s version. Gruelle’s daughter, Marcella, found a rag doll in an attic storage chest during a visit to her grandma’s house in Arcola. The doll had no face, so her dad, Johnny, put the famous black eyes, red triangle nose, and separated mouth on the doll, and that’s how the original Raggedy Ann was born.

My husband became a medical traveler, and I decided to put my career on hold to tag along. In the process, I found my roots again. What...
