Artist's Description

A disintegrating casket in the morgue at Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum.

The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum is often cited as one of the most haunted places in America. Located in Weston, West Virginia, and renamed Weston State Hospital in 1913, it operated from 1864 to 1994 as a state-run psychiatric hospital. While it was initially built to accommodate only 250 individuals, as time went on, the hospital became excessively overcrowded, housing over 2,400 patients at its zenith in the 1950s. Tragically, these individuals experienced mistreatment, immense pain, and physiological torment, including being locked in cages, chained to walls, and subjected to electroshock therapy. Thousands of lobotomies were performed here, and through the years, there were many deaths, including murders and suicides.

As the 8th photographer in 4 generations of my family, I don't remember a time when photography was not part of my life. By the time I was five years old, I was standing on a stool in the darkroom, helping my dad develop pictures. It was my job to transfer the photos from the hypo to the water bath. I went to college for interior design. After I graduated, I had a long successful career as an art buyer and designer for a large home furnishings company. In 2006, I had a significant life change.
