Description
Autumn at Fallingwater, Architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s masterpiece, in Mill Run, Pennsylvania.
Nestled amidst the picturesque Laurel Highlands of southwest Pennsylvania, approximately 70 miles from Pittsburgh, lies an architectural marvel that came to life in 1935. This stunning home is cantilevered over Bear Run's cascading waters and was designed to be the weekend retreat for Liliane and Edgar J. Kaufmann, owners of Kaufmann’s Department Store in Pittsburgh.
Upon its completion, Fallingwater was hailed by Time magazine as Wright's most beautiful job, and it earned a coveted spot on the Smithsonian's list of 28 Places to See Before You Die. Recognizing its significance, the house was designated a National Historic Landmark on May 11, 1976. The American Institute of Architects named Fallingwater on their best all-time work of American Architecture list in 1991, and it earned the 29th spot on America's Favorite Architecture list. Alongside seven other Wright creations, it was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019 under the name The 20th-Century Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright.
