The Bean Blossom Bridge is one of Indiana’s most loved covered bridges. It is a modified Howe Through Truss Bridge is a very rare bridge with only three left in existence. And
while it’s not the oldest bridge in Indiana, it is the only single-lane covered bridge in the state still in its original location.
In 1880, Mathias Gilbert and 39 residents petitioned for a bridge to be constructed over the Bean Blossom Creek, making travel between Nashville and Georgetown, which has since been renamed Bean Blossom, easier. Captain Joseph Balsley, a carpenter and stair builder from Seymour, Indiana, was awarded the bid, which was completed before the end of the year. The Bean Blossom Bridge was on the main road between the two towns until State Road 135 bypassed it in 1936.
The bridge has been renovated many times throughout its almost 150 years. In 1988, while the highway department provided the materials, the local high school building trades class did the renovation work.
The Bean Blossom Bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2022.
