Description
West Virginia’s Beartown State Park, is located on the eastern summit of Droop Mountain in northern Greenbrier and Pocahontas Counties. This 110-acre natural area is renowned for its half-mile boardwalk that offers breathtaking views of unique rocky formations, massive boulders, cliff overhangs, and deep crevices.
In 1970, the land was obtained with financial support from the Nature Conservancy and a generous contribution made by Edwin G. Polan in memory of his son, Ronald Keith Neal, a brave local soldier who tragically lost his life during the Vietnam War. The park gets its name from the locals who believed that the numerous cave-like openings in the rocks were perfect hibernation spots for black bears in the region and is a reference to the countless deep, narrow crevices that intersect the area and resemble the streets of a small town when viewed from above.
