Description
Wyoming's scenic Fremont Canyon is traversed by the North Platte River, with towering vertical cliffs reaching heights of over 200 feet here near the entrance of the canyon and exceeding 500 feet in some areas.
The canyon was named in honor of renowned explorer John Charles Fremont, who, as a lieutenant in the army, explored it in 1842. Despite his attempt to navigate the canyon by boat, he failed and lost all provisions along with the boat. However, the history of the canyon predates this event by thousands of years, serving as a significant hunting ground for Native American tribes who left behind numerous petroglyphs and artifacts. In fact, some of Wyoming's oldest human artifacts were discovered within Fremont Canyon.
