Description
I have been keeping an eye on this nesting Osprey at one of the local southern Illinois lakes. Her nest isn’t far from the parking lot or the boat ramp so she is use to quite a bit of activity. On this day, it was a beautiful spring day; the fishermen were out in force. I had just walk to the edge of the shoreline, when I noticed two men in a fishing boat killed their engine and let their boat start drifting toward the nest. I thought her back was to them but she knew everything that was going on. She let out a few warning squawks and then stood up and flared her wings. When they kept floating nearer, she began to fly, circling the nest and swooping low over the boat. At one point, I thought she might actually make contact with one of fishermen but she never did. When the boat was about six foot from her nest, they finally restarted the engine and took off. They never looked up and seemed to be oblivious to her even though she was making quite a racket and very upset. She flew 6 or 8 loops scanning for additional danger and at one point eyed me before finally landing back in the nest and settling down.
The Osprey or Pandion haliaetus is also known to be called, sea hawk, river hawk and fish hawk. This large raptor is a fish eating bird of prey. Ospreys tolerate a wide variety of habitats but like to nest near a body of water that will provide an adequate food supply.
