Description
Woodburn Circle, also called the WVU Quadrangle, is integral to West Virginia University's downtown campus in Morgantown, Monongalia County, West Virginia.
This historic architectural complex was developed during the late 1800s, comprising three collegiate structures arranged around an oval pathway. The buildings encompass Martin Hall on the left, Woodburn Hall in the center, and Chitwood Hall on the right.
West Virginia University's oldest campus building, Martin Hall, was initially built as University Hall in 1870. It was renamed Martin Hall in 1889. Woodburn Hall, the focal point of The Circle, was completed as New Hall in 1876 and has since become an iconic symbol of the university. Chitwood Hall completed Woodburn Circle when it was constructed in 1893.
In 1974, Woodburn Circle was officially recognized and added to the National Register of Historic Places.
