Description
Smoke bellows as the Shay Steam Locomotive No. 11 lumbers down the track and Shay Engine No. 2 pushes during the annual Parade of Steam at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park in West Virginia.
The Shay Steam Locomotives were never fast. Still, they could accomplish the impossible - ascend the steepest inclines, navigate sharp hairpin curves, and traverse delicate makeshift tracks, all while transporting massive loads from the forest to the mill.
The Hutchinson Lumber Company of Feather Falls, California put this Shay Locomotive into service in 1923 under the name Feather River No. 3. It was retired in 1967 and sent to Pacific Southwest Railway Museum before being purchased by Cass Scenic Railroad in 1999. This locomotive, weighing 103 tons, is the second-largest surviving Shay Locomotive. As Shay No. 11, this locomotive is the pusher engine on the Cass Scenic Railroad's Bald Knob Run.
