Description
Cass Scenic Railroad’s Steam Locomotive #2 belches black smoke as it prepares to pull out of the Cass Train Station in the mountains of West Virginia.
Experience the bygone era of steam locomotives at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park as you witness the marvel of the Shay Locomotive. This steam engine was invented to accomplish the impossible - it could ascend the steepest inclines, navigate sharp hairpin curves, and traverse delicate makeshift tracks, all while transporting massive loads from the forest to the lumber mill.
Constructed in July 1928 for Mayo Lumber Company of Paldi, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, the Shay #2 is a Pacific Coast Shay. It is the only Pacific Coast Shay now living on the East Coast. It holds a unique position in history as the only known Shay to run on three types of fuel: wood, oil, and bituminous coal. Shay #2 was being used for switching cars on the Vancouver docks when its career ended in 1970, making it one of the last commercially operated Shays.
