Description
Constructed in 1770, this is the oldest multi-story log cabin home in West Virginia, still located on its original site.
It was the home of Colonel James Graham and his family. The Grahams migrated from Virginia and were among the first to settle in Summers County, West Virginia. The Graham family remained in the home until 1860.
It was here that the Shawnee Indians attacked in the Spring of 1777, killing Graham’s son, John, a neighbor, and a young slave boy and kidnapping their daughter, Elizabeth. It was 1785 before they successfully ransomed her back.
The home is 25 x 28 feet and built of poplar, walnut, and oak logs. It has 12-foot ceilings, two floors, and an attic, making it significantly larger than other pioneer cabins. When the house was built, it most likely had a single door and no windows.
It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 and is currently a museum.
