Description
Situated on the Pittsburgh waterfront just outside of PNC Park, a statue of Bill Mazeroski stands as a testament to one of the greatest moments in the city's sports history.
The momentous occasion was October 13, 1960, during Game 7 of the World Series. It was an intense face-off between the Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Yankees. The series was tied 3-3. Game 7 was tied 9-9 in the bottom of the 9th inning. The scene was set with no outs and bases empty when William Stanley Mazeroski came up to bat. Maz hit a home run that soared over the outfield wall's 406-foot mark, securing victory for his team.
The statue encapsulates the triumphant moment when Mazeroski rounded second base during his victorious run of the bases.
Unveiled in 2010, this sculpture is the work of Susan Wagner and is based on an image captured by Post-Gazette photographer James Klingensmith.
