Description
In this Autumn Pennsylvania countryside image, a narrow pathway loops around the breathtaking red and white star barn at Duck Down Farms.
The Duck Down Barn is a rare star barn. While star feature is linked to the Pennsylvania Dutch, the barns in the Laural Highlands differ since their barn stars are always cut out and applied as opposed to the “Hex” signs the Pennsylvania Germans paint on their barns in other areas of the state. These stars were a popular barn decoration during the Victorian Era, with the earliest stars appearing on Somerset County barns around 1870 and continuing through the early 1900s.
Also a Pennsylvania Barn, this unique architectural barn design originated in Pennsylvania and became the state’s preferred barn style. This style of barn always has two levels and has two distinguishing external features: the forebay, an overhang that cantilevers over the ground floor, and a bank that enables easy tractor access to the upper level.
