Description
I stumbled upon this beautiful old building while I was admiring a church down the block. The “Greetings from Roanoke” mural on the side caught my eye first. Then when I crossed the street to get a better look, I realized how beautiful this building had been restored, and I just knew it had to be one of the city’s important landmarks.
While the building is known today as the Gill Memorial Building, it was once the Gill Memorial Eye, Ear, and Throat Hospital. Founded in 1926 by Dr. Elbyrne Gill, it is believed to have been the first specialty hospital in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
The Hospital was sold to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital in 1982 and then finally closed in 1996. After renovations, it reopened in 2017 as the home of RAMP, an acronym for Regional Acceleration and Mentoring Program. It is now a hub for entrepreneurial activity in downtown Roanoke.
The Gill Memorial Building is located at 709 S Jefferson St, Roanoke, Virginia.
