Description
The design for the Nebraska State Capitol was selected from a nationwide competition with Bertram Goodhue a New York architect being the winner.
Tower on the Plains was his design concept. The broad low base reflects the expanse of the prairie while the tall tower rising from the center is a landmark to be viewed for miles away.
Goodhue proposed constructing the building out of durable Indiana Limestone with a traditional cross within a square floor plan. The building design was appealing because it could be built in four phases to fit the Nebraska pay as you go budget.
Construction began in April of 1922. Workers built around the existing Capitol building. This allowed government business to continue uninterrupted during the construction of the first phase. In the second phase, they razed the old building and built the north, south and east arms of the central cross. The third phase was the tower and placement of the Sower on top. The fourth and final phase was the west side. It was completed in 1932 with the final cost of construction being $9.8 million.
