Description
The formal rose garden at Filoli.
Filoli was built for William Bowers Bourn II, owner of one of California's richest gold mines and president of the Spring Valley Water Company which supplied all of San Francisco's water. The estate was named from an acronym formed by combining the first two letters from the key words of William Bourn's credo: "Fight for a just cause; Love your fellow man; Live a good life." Located 30 miles south of San Francisco, Filoli is an historic site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and one of the finest remaining country estates of the early 20th century.
